MIDWEST FARM

This project, developed over fifteen years, integrates a designed landscape with six hundred acres of working farm, woods and prairie. When we began the work, the landscape was but a collection of old trees without any integral connection to the 1929 house and the farm beyond. Our design was meant to create a union between the agricultural land and the inhabited landscape. The spatial organization of the gardens, entry drives, and meadows with structured planting serves to knit the existing designed landscape to the agricultural fields. In some areas we let nature take its course and used mowing strategies to create beautiful spatial experiences. Over the last ten years, we have created a "new forest" of native trees.
