MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON
Deborah Nevins & Associates and Nevins & Benito Landscape Architecture created a cohesive landscape for the redeveloped campus of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston: one that knits together a century’s worth of signature architecture and sculpture, including two new buildings by Steven Holl Architects—the Glassell School of Art, completed 2018, and the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building for modern and contemporary art, completed 2020—midcentury structures by Mies van der Rohe, and Isamu Noguchi’s masterpiece, the Cullen Sculpture Garden. Where the MFAH campus previously lacked cohesiveness or identity, the landscape now serves as the connective fabric that creates a sense of place within the city. DNA and NBLA designed the new plazas, water features, and landscape, all with an eye to drawing in the diverse population of Houston. The project has been awarded LEED certification, incorporating green roof technologies as well as both native and naturalized plants adapted to the demanding climatic conditions.
